Kobe Jakil, Atlanta, Georgia.
Q.) What is your name/stage name?
A.) “Kobe Jakil”
Q.) Where are you from?
A.) “I grew up in the College Park/Riverdale area of Georgia which is like the southside of Atlanta. Over time I migrated more down south to Jonesboro and ended up graduating from school in Henry County.“
Q.) What do you do?
A.) “I like to call myself a full-time creator nowadays lol, because I feel like I’m very skilled in a lot of different areas of art & entertainment. I’m a musician (piano as my main instrument), rapper, singer, producer, songwriter, graphic designer, creative director, videographer & video editor, and fashion designer.“
Q.) How long have you been making music?
A.) “Been making music for about 7 years now & releasing it professionally for about 5.“
Q.) What are you making music for?
A.) “I feel like I’m making music #1 because I love it so much & I feel like the reason I do music professionally is to express and eventually be a voice for everyone in the world, remind people their not alone, bring people closer to God, create generational wealth for my family, and prove to people whose soul is like mine that we can accomplish whatever we hope and dream and live in the fruits of our labor as long as we stay true to God. So, I guess I use my music to be a positive force of nature and to uplift the creator, but without being too “preachy” as society might say lol.“
Q.) What’s driving you?
A.) “What’s driving me is the love and passion I have for it. I wake up every day with a burning flame of inspiration in my chest, ready to be in the game creating great music for the world. I feel like another one of the things that are driving me is the urge to break boundaries in music. I feel like people are getting tired of the same things being repeated in music, sonically, lyrically, aesthetically, etc. and I feel like God sends me so many amazing ideas that I could offer to the world in art. I really want to show the world they don’t have to be constrained to one sound, genre, topic, or anything, they can create whatever they want, but also encourage them to create things with meaning and a positive underlying message.“
Q.) Who’s your biggest inspiration?
A.) “I feel like my biggest inspiration in music is probably my Dad and his story, he ended up producing several hit records & ended up being a two-time Grammy winning producer, having produced hits on two of OutKast’s albums. Andre 3000 is my biggest rapper inspiration though.“
Q.) What genre of music do you create?
A.) “Mostly I’ve only released Hip-Hop to satisfy my mostly Atlanta fanbase, but I create every genre of music and I’m not just sayin that to sound good lol. I’m actually working on a disco album right now, but you didn’t hear that from me.“
Q.) What was it like working with Halim Phoenix, Jelani Imani, Bravado, and Dread Scott?
A.) “Working with them was a dope experience honestly, every single one. Me and Halim have such a special bond already outside of music with us being in a relationship, so I feel like it really shows when we create something together, I really feel like our voices are like a match made in heaven lol! The rest of the artists like Bravado, Jelani Imani, Dread Scott, all are super freaking talented and skilled at what they do and I feel like every collaboration I did, I learned something new about how to approach a beat with differently and grab the listeners’ attention and I love how each artist I collaborate with is already usually on the same wavelength I’m on mentally, so we complement each other in what we’re saying every time. We got some brand-new tunes on the way too!“
Q.) What are some features you have?
A.) “I just did a feature for a young, super dope upcoming artist by the name of Mr. Midnight, just hopped on my brother, Bravado’s cypher that should be out by the time this interview releases lol & I’ve produced / did background vocals for some tracks for my bro Lord Bones.”
Q.) What are some features you want to get?
A.) “It’s so much talent in Atlanta and just in the game right now period I couldn’t even name them all to be honest, but if I had a top 5 for people I feel like I’d make really good music with and haven’t yet, it’d be Andre 3000, Childish Gambino, Travis Scott, Kanye West, & for my generation, Jelani Imani, even though we already have a collaboration, I feel like we need to just go crazy on collab project one day in the future cause I feel like our sound would go crazy together. It’s just the sauce that Atlanta & the world needs lol!“
Q.) Who’s one person, dead or alive, that you’d want to work with?
A.) “J Cole. I really want him to eventually be my music mentor in the future and give me some game in being a successful rapper while still managing to remain himself in the process and shed light through his music.“
Q.) Are you signed to a label?
A.) “No, I really want a distribution deal that’s setup to where I don’t have to be a slave and still own all my stuff and my time. Most labels might not like hearing that though, but we’ll see what’s in God’s plan. I’ve got some ideas for my own label as well.“
Q.) Do you want a record deal, a distribution deal, or none?
A.) “Honestly I want whichever deal I can still own my masters, time and dignity with.“
Q.) Who are your biggest supporters?
A.) “My family for sure, but then it’s my people in Atlanta, without them and God I’d be nothing.“
Q.) Where did your name come from?
A.) “Well I decided to use my first and middle name, Kobe Jakil. I was named after Kobe Bryant after he won the championship in the 99-2000 season.“
Q.) What are you currently working on?
A.) “Mannnnnnnn, I’m currently working on my first Disco album! I’m so ready to give this to the listeners, I can’t say too much but I’m putting together a whole experience for you guys.“
Q.) What is your latest release?
A.) “My latest release was my first ever ‘Studio Album’, “KOBE”. fully produced & engineered by me.“
Q.) When is your next release?
A.) “Can’t say too much, but when summer end’s, we feast.“
