Essex County Correctional Facility, often compared to the infamous Rikers Island, is facing scrutiny after an alarming episode of violence involving Brooklyn rapper Casanova.
Casanova, known for his ties with Roc Nation and once celebrated as the contemporary M.O.P., is currently housed in the Newark, NJ correctional facility. Recently, a startling incident was reported where Casanova was seriously injured in a brawl with another inmate.
Casanova, who openly identified as a Blood gang member before renouncing gang involvement and pleading guilty to federal drug conspiracy charges, was reportedly slashed during the melee. Eyewitness accounts described a ghastly scene with Casanova’s face covered in blood. The Essex County Correctional Facility downplayed the incident but has launched an investigation.
It is believed that the incident might be connected to Casanova’s recent renouncement of his gang affiliation. Following the altercation, Casanova retaliated, leaving his assailant’s jail suit stained with blood.
Concerns have been raised regarding the facility’s security protocols as it was revealed that the unit where the altercation occurred was not searched either on the night of the incident or the following morning.
Additionally, a concerning trend of violence within the correctional facility is coming to light. Since March, 17 incidents involving inmate assaults have been documented. One such incident, the brutal beating of Jayshawn Boyd in 2021, was caught on film and resulted in three inmates being found guilty; two of them were convicted of attempted murder.
An NBC interview with a lieutenant from the facility underscored the potential dangers of assigning officers without proper training to oversee federal inmates. Starting in January, new state law mandates correctional officers to complete police academy training before assuming responsibilities involving inmate oversight.
There is a growing call for improved conditions and stringent security measures at the Essex County Correctional Facility in the wake of these incidents. This serves as a harsh reminder of the unsettling violence and the urgent need for reform within correctional facilities.
