T.I. is clearing the air after his recent comments about Verzuz sparked backlash online and drew a reaction from co-creator Timbaland.
For years, T.I. has openly entertained the idea of stepping onto the Verzuz stage, frequently naming potential opponents and engaging in discussions about possible matchups. Earlier this year, he even exchanged words with 50 Cent regarding a potential Verzuz battle, fueling speculation that a showdown could eventually happen.
However, during a recent appearance on The Joe Budden Podcast, the Atlanta rap veteran revealed that his perspective has changed. T.I. explained that he no longer has an interest in participating in the popular battle series, suggesting that he has moved beyond that stage of his career.
“I don’t want to indulge in that side of life no more,” he said, adding that he sees little value in engaging in public back-and-forths with other artists at this point in his life. His most controversial remark came when he referred to Verzuz as “poor people activity,” a statement that quickly spread across social media and generated criticism from fans.
Given the platform’s importance to hip-hop culture, it didn’t take long for one of its architects to respond. Verzuz was created by Timbaland and Swizz Beatz, whose vision transformed artist battles into major cultural events. After seeing T.I.’s comments circulate online, Timbaland reacted with a brief but telling response, simply posting: “Huh?”
As debate continued, T.I. returned to clarify his remarks and explain the context behind them. The rapper admitted that alcohol played a role in the conversation, stating, “First of all, I was drinking.” He went on to explain that his comments reflected his personal experience with discussions surrounding Verzuz rather than a direct attack on the platform itself.
According to T.I., one of the main reasons he has lost interest is because conversations about potential opponents often devolve into arguments and social media drama. Rather than revisiting those debates, he said he would rather focus his energy elsewhere.
While his original comments ignited controversy, T.I.’s follow-up explanation suggests that his issue is less about Verzuz as a concept and more about the discourse that tends to surround potential matchups. Even so, the exchange has reignited discussion about whether fans will ever see the rap icon participate in a Verzuz battle in the future.
