How serious are you about your career?
My name is Curtis. I’ve been making music for over a decade now. I’m a hip hop artist from South Africa. I’m extremely serious about my music career, as I’ve always been. For the sake of my craft, I competed in (and won) rap battles for a while a few years ago and it really sharpened my skills as a writer.
Who inspires you the most?
My biggest inspiration is definitely Childish Gambino. I see a lot of myself in him. His transparency and honesty is what I admire most about him. I’m someone who deals with mental health a lot (as I have depression, I’m bipolar, and have anxiety issues), so vulnerability in music is something I love. In a lot of ways (I know it sounds narcissistic) I find myself as a heavy influence in many ways. Once I make something I release, the next project I aim to be better than that guy who released it; I aim to be more creative than him; I take note of how free he felt making that project; I take note of his honesty in his project.
What got you into making music?
The main thing that got me into making music is the feelings it sparks (as well as being introduced to hip hop pretty much at birth). I’ve gone through many dark and low points in my life, and it’s been amazing how much music can bring me out of it. Music is something spiritual to me in the way I consume it. Making music is an expression of the feelings it’s given me, along with the feelings from journeys in my life; it’s like an aural diary. I also reeeeeaaaallly love synthpop/shoegaze pop/dreampop: that’s the collective of genres that really made me understand how much more music can truly make me feel.
Who is your favorite producer?
My favorite producer might be somewhere between M83, Beach House and Kanye West. I fully respect people who are able to produce, it’s something I truly wish I could do. The thing that stands out about the names I’ve mentioned is that not only are they amazing producers, but they also possess the ability to bless their production with amazing vocals.
What is one of your best songs/beats?
The song I pick to present is “Being Happy Isn’t Enough”
