The ongoing trial of rapper Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffrey Lamar Williams, and his alleged associates who are accused of being members of the “Young Slime life” criminal organization, is now in its second month of jury selection. However, the case has faced challenges and delays due to its large scope, and it may take half a year or more to complete.
This past week, the Fulton County District Attorney’s office filed a motion to have two of the defendants, Kahlieff Adams and Tenquarius Mender, tried separately. Of the 28 people originally charged in the case, eight have taken plea deals, and six are being tried separately since they were not arrested before the trial began.
The DA’s motion is based on the fact that Adams’ and Mender’s lawyers are both pregnant, and the trial is expected to take six to nine months. The DA argues that their maternity leave would prevent them from representing their clients effectively. However, both clients want to be tried together, and their lawyers do not believe that their pregnancy will affect their ability to represent their clients.
Mender and Adams have also stated that they do not wish to be represented by other attorneys, and their lawyers have said that it would be expensive and possibly prejudicial to try their clients separately after jury selection has already begun. In response to the DA’s motion, Mender’s lawyer Nicole Fegan told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the motion made them look unsympathetic to expectant mothers and that they can adequately represent their clients, as Rihanna did while pregnant.
A hearing for the motion has been scheduled for March 1, and Judge Ural Granville will preside over it.
