Dr. Phil Good A.K.A. DPG; Dayton, Ohio
What is your name/stage name?
“Phillip Heyse/Dr. Phil Good — because I’m actually a doctor, surgeon to be specific, and I happen to like Motley Crue and … well, Dr. Feel Good came to mind. Been thinking of changing to DPG … because I hate Dr. Phil on television … and I think a lot of other people do too, lol. (I mean for fuck’s sake; the guy isn’t even a real doctor as I understand it.)”
Where are you from?
“I’m from Dayton, OH. I was born here. I work in the same hospital that I was born in. I’ll probably die there too. My dad worked there as a surgeon too, for 37 years… I dunno, perhaps it all seems fitting to me.“
What do you do?
“See above. General surgeon. Been in practice since 2013, 5 years of residency before that. Somewhat burned out already. My pops always said surgery was the most fun you could have with your pants on. I’m not gonna disagree. And it sure helps to pay the bills. But making music is more fun and challenging in a good way to be honest. I wish I could make a similar living doing it instead.“
How long have you been making music?
“I started producing/recording my own music in December of 2021. I’d started doing some recordings on my iPhone and my brother (who happens to have a degree in AV engineering) hated what I was sending him. He convinced my wife to buy me a StudioOne package for Xmas that year. I didn’t know a lick about it, but I took it with a lot of interest and have invested quite a bit of time learning on my own.
Who’s your biggest inspiration?
“That’s a tough one. It’s some sort of weird tie between most of my family members. They all have their influences on me.“
What genre of music do you create?
“I’m mainly into jazz/pop but because I like how it fits into beat making.“
What was it like working with different collabs?
“Some good, some bad. The good ones were fun, just jamming with some like-minded musicians and having them lay tracks down over some of my stuff, like “Pandemic Pandemonium” … I had two anesthesiologist guitar aficionados come by and play on that one. Other collabs have been one-sided. Sending me a real raw bare bones melody and having me basically create close to an entire song around it, mix it, produce it, etc. … and then only getting 50% streaming revenue. I won’t be doing that again.“
What are some features you have?
“I’ve had some of my tracks featured on live YouTube reviews.”
What are some features you want to get?
“I’m new so anything will suffice to get more exposure.“
Who’s one person, dead or alive, that you’d want to work with?
“Paul McCartney. Genius. Pure genius.“
Are you signed to a label?
“Nope. Not sure if I’d want it either. People are always out for their own interest and I’m tired of getting screwed around in life. It’d have to be a pretty sweet deal, I think. Then again, what do I know?”
Do you want a record deal, a distribution deal, or none?
“If someone legitimately thought my stuff had merit and wanted to work with me … and the deal was fair, I’d be all ears.“
Who are your biggest supporters?
“Definitely my family. They have to listen to all my demos whether or not they like it lol. Plus put up with all the time I spend in my studio working on this stuff.“
Where did your name come from?
“See above.“
What are you currently working on?
“I‘ve kind of switched gears from trying to producing rock and roll to producing beats and jazz/pop type stuff. It’s more interesting to me to learn a new style. I’ve got a handful of projects that could reasonably go out at any time.”
What is your latest release?
“I Just Wanna“
When is your next release?
“Probably in 2-3 weeks. I try to give each new release about a month on its own to see how it does without having to compete with something even newer than it. Problem is, I’m getting a backlog of stuff to get out. But I don’t want to blow them all at once.“
