What is your name/stage name?
My name is Alex Foster and I go by the name Blue Basement
Where are you from?
I am from Calgary Alberta in the frigid tundras of Canada
What do you do?
Before this year I spent many years in marketing as well as software firms doing more technical things like programming or building websites. But as of recently a lot of my focus has been on music, I have always loved singing and as soon as I could play and instrument writing my own songs soon followed. I suppose to sum it up I am musician
How long have you been making music?
I have been trying to record music on and off for probably as long as I’ve been playing the guitar, however I have only put in a real effort and tried to make something tolerable to listen just last year around September. As for writing songs; and playing them in would say going on 16 years now, which is kinda nuts to think about.
What was your first song/project?
My first project was aptly named “The Alex Foster Project” which was basically just me trying to play metal on an acoustic guitar and recorded on a cheap usb micro phone. Some of those old song I recorded are still on my YouTube, and the channel name itself is still the Alex Foster Project. I guess I’m just sentimental like that. I’ve written and forgotten so many songs over the years I wouldn’t even know where to begin to tell you which was the first if I’m being honest
Who’s your inspiration?
I have a lot of inspiration from the music I grew up listening to which is basically a swamp mix of everything. I love the biggies from the 90’s Seattle scene like Nirvana, Alice and chains, sound garden but I also love the pop-punk/punk type stuff from the late 90’s – 2000’s era like greenday, rancid , the distillers , anti-flag , misfits. But at the end of the day I am not biased to any one genre and if the music hits, it hits.
What was it like working with
I haven’t really worked with anyone since I am pretty new to the scene here! But I am always open to meet new people or collaborate, especially if we’re fan of each other’s music.
What are some features you have?
Other than a little track promo with Canna Town I haven’t featured or have had any feature yet
Who’s one person, dead or alive, that you’d want to work with?
If it were a producer I’d definitely like to at the very least have Steve Albini record drums with me cause he seems to be the only one who does it right. As for musicians it would be really cool to working with thom yorke one day and I’ve always liked Blood Red Shoes from the UK as well, there are so many talented people out there doing their thing i kinda like…who DO I wanna work with? I think as time goes in and I meet more people this will be easier decision
Are you signed to a label?
Not currently but I have been distributing my music so far out of my own business Blue Basement Media
Do you want a record deal, a distribution deal, or none?
It would all depend on what’s on the table and taken into account I also have a six year old son. But I would love to record some of these songs properly and with people who know what they are doing. If the deal feels right then that’s the deal I’m taking, could be different day by day!
Who are your biggest supporters?
I’ve been lucky to have a fairly close and supportive group around me so I’d say my biggest supporters would be my family, and the friends that sorta became family along the way.
What are you currently working on?
Currently I have been working on recording tracks for an album called “Tomfoolery” but after having some family move in for a bit it’s been hard to sit down and actually
