We are currently living in a world characterized by a culture of consumption of art and entertainment, thanks to social media platforms. More often than not, music can be lost or forgotten in a sea of content. Musicians know this fact, which is why a majority of them work hard to ensure they release captivating videos with appealing visuals. Videos not only help artists to stand out from other talents but also give them a chance to push for the attention of their audience. In reality, good artists are easy to miss, and that is why they utilize every available method to get their music out there for the world to hear. Having a music video with good visuals boosts an artist’s visibility and exposure exponentially and allows them to tell their stories.
Kelyes is an artist, actress and songwriter. She is also the founder of Kelsey Delemar Productions LLC., a company that writes songs and scripts, and manages auditions for new creative talents in various populations. Music has been an outlet for Kelyes to show the world her creativity. She believes in authenticity as the pillar of her professional endeavors. Kelyes has been working on a musical project since the middle of last year, work that culminated in the release of a new song, “Not Around, Pt. 2.” The piece is an extension of her first song, “Not Around,” that she created back in 2020. It was during this period that she noted that many acting gigs were transitioning into the virtual world and that a lot of productions were slowing down due to the pandemic. She simply had to adjust.
As a professional songwriter, Kelyes knows that music videos are a focal point of what an artist hopes to express through their music. It also forms a substantial part of their creative vision. She adds that the visual impact of a music video can be just as powerful as the actual song. Visuals used in a video have the ability to connect an artist with their audience, allowing them to know the artist better and see the world through their eyes. Kelyes insists that people feel a bond when they are able to share emotions and experiences, and music videos give them an opportunity for this to happen. Music videos do much more than compliment a song; they also build on it. The content of the video can be the difference between simply enjoying a song and truly understanding the meaning behind it.
The video for “Not Around, Pt. 2” begins with Kelyes coming out of an elevator with a moving box. It is easy to assume right away that this is a woman who is moving into a new place. If you have already heard ‘Not Around’ you can tell that this is not only a visual representation of her moving on but also a figurative way of communicating something to the audience. This can be looked at as a woman moving on—physically, mentally, and emotionally. The relatability of this first scene can easily draw anyone in, as most of us have been somewhere new or had to start over. Another intriguing aspect of the music video is how Kelyes goes through the mundane motions of unpacking her belongings in this new place as she recalls distant memories. Viewers are shown flashbacks from the ‘Not Around’ video, a moment that resonates with many because anything tangible can make us go back in time, and feel emotions that shaped us.
Kelyes has elevated her new song into a cinematic, all-encompassing experience for her listeners—a perfect way to tell the world her story. This is simply an introduction to her directorial debut of her musical short film that she wrote, directed, produced and starred in.
