Josh Loewen is a comedic pop-rock artist who uses his sense of humor to create unique and catchy music. In this interview, we get to know more about his interests, brand, message, songwriting process, and what makes his sound unique. Josh shares how his love for the outdoors and comedic writing influences his music, and how he encourages others to make the most of the opportunities they have. He also talks about how his songwriting process is inspired by physical activities like going to the gym and how he finds concepts for his music. Additionally, Josh shares his favorite artist of all time, his upcoming single, and what makes his sound unique.
Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music? If so – do they influence your music?
Yes, I’m into the outdoors and incorporate that into my brand imaging, and I like writing comedic material – which influences my lyrics.
What does your brand stand for? What is the message in your music?
My main message is to “embrace the reality”. Rather than go to the city for press photoshoots, which I would’ve done a year ago, I rep my small town. I use all of my talents to make music, from writing to my sense of humour – to give my creativity maximum control. I’m making the most of the deck I’ve been dealt and encourage others to do the same.
What do you hope you make people feel when they listen to your music?
I hope people laugh, even a slight smile would suffice, and that it brings them a 2-3 minute escape to enjoy a carefully crafted story.
Is there anyone in your personal life/family who inspired you to start or continue making music?
I got into music years ago but then I turned 20, life happened, and I quit. At the start of 2023 I had a couple friends who inspired me a lot creatively so I started writing, and eventually – through an unexpected turn of events – made Monsters In My Closet and decided to start this project.
What does your songwriting process look like? How do you find concepts?
I often come up with melodies during or after physical activities. Lately it’s been the gym. So I’ll come home all inspired, and work out my melodies until I find the “right one”. Once I have the melodies, I sing lyrics until I have the right ones, and then I’ll record them – and transcribe them into my notes when the song is done.
Where do you get your beats from and what does the process look like?
I get my beats from various producers on YouTube or Beatstars. I’ll listen to a lot of them and then find one that fits the melody I have. From there, I’ll write lyrics, record, and mix/master the song.
Who is your favorite artist of all time? Favorite song?
Flight Of The Conchords, song: “Hurt Feelings”
Are any of your songs based on real events or people? Spill the tea.
My next single is very loosely based on a run-in me and my friend had at a night club, but that’s a story for another time.
