On the poignant fifth anniversary of the heart-rending demise of XXXTENTACION, who was only 20 when his life was cruelly cut short, a haunting new single titled “I’m Not Human” has been released by his estate as a tribute to the late hip-hop prodigy.
The world recalls that it was on June 18, 2018, when Jahseh Onfroy, popularly known by his stage name XXXTENTACION, met a tragic end in a shooting incident outside a motorcycle dealership in Florida. This new track, which was initially slated for a January release to coincide with what would have been XXXTENTACION’s 25th birthday, was deferred to be unveiled today as a memorial.
“I’m Not Human” is characterized by a stripped-down acoustic sound, with a heartrending vocal contribution from Lil Uzi Vert. The production was meticulously handled by John Cunningham, who was a close collaborator and friend of XXXTENTACION. Cunningham released an emotionally-charged note alongside the song, reflecting on the creation process of the track.
Reliving a cherished memory from 2018, Cunningham wrote, “During my time with Jah in Florida, we used to immerse ourselves in music within the sanctity of his room – me on guitar and him lending his voice. The day he sang ‘I’m not human’ with the guitar accompaniment, we exchanged knowing glances, recognizing that we had stumbled upon something extraordinary. We replayed the voice memo he recorded and envisioned completing it.”
Cunningham also shared that they attempted recording in the studio, but the magic captured in that voice memo couldn’t be replicated, hence they decided to keep the original recording.
“I’m Not Human” can be streamed below and offers a soul-stirring glimpse into the raw talent that was tragically taken too soon.
