Philadelphia’s music scene is buzzing with fresh talent, and at the forefront is an artist who’s blending genres and breaking boundaries. Terrell, known on stage as Nakuu—or simply Kuu to his friends—is making waves with his latest release, “Go.”
Originally from Riverdale, Georgia, Nakuu moved to Pennsylvania when he was just seven years old. Music has been a constant in his life from the very beginning. “I’ve been doing music all my life, literally,” he says. “From being a child in church to getting my own studio in ninth grade—it was solidified from there!”
His stage name, Nakuu, holds special meaning. “In the Asian language, it means ‘cry,’ which connects to the emotional side of my music,” he explains. “In the African language, it means ‘animal,’ representing the rage side. As long as you feel it, that’s all I want.”
“Go” is a perfect example of this duality. The track is an energetic blend of rock and hip-hop that’s sure to get listeners moving. With its catchy beat and powerful lyrics, it’s designed to inspire and energize. “I mostly freestyle everything I do,” Nakuu says about his creative process. “I just go into the studio and lay down bar after bar. It’s easier for me that way.”
Despite already achieving significant milestones—like garnering 17 million views on Facebook for a song addressing racism—Nakuu remains humble and driven by his passion. “Music is my way of life,” he says, a sentiment so strong he has it tattooed on his arm. “Whether I blow up or not, I will always do music because that’s just who I am.”
