Taylor stunned fans in 2020 when she announced her retirement from music, but the decision unlocked opportunities few—even her advisers—saw coming. Since then, she’s found major success in acting, earning widespread praise for her role in A Thousand and One, which won the Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize. More recently, she received Golden Globe and Critics Choice nominations for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Perfidia in One Battle After Another, co-starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Many now see her as a strong contender ahead of the upcoming Oscar nominations.
Reflecting on her bold decision during an episode of Deadline’s Take Ten, Taylor shared that retiring from music was about refusing to be boxed in. “I wanted more for myself… I wanted to open other boxes,” she explained, recalling how skepticism from others only fueled her resolve.

She backed those words with action. In 2021, Taylor launched her 360 creative studio, The Aunties Production, and committed to becoming a director, actress, and creative force who helps others bring their visions to life. That promise is now coming full circle as she prepares to direct her first feature-length film.
Music, however, never left her completely. In 2025, Taylor returned on her own terms with Escape Room, a visual album that earned a Best R&B Album nomination at the 2026 Grammy Awards—proof that her artistry still resonates deeply.
And the creative expansion doesn’t stop there. Taylor recently revealed she’s enrolled in culinary school and plans to open her own restaurant soon, adding “chef” to an already stacked résumé that includes choreographer, entrepreneur, and mother.
Teyana Taylor’s journey shows that stepping away isn’t stepping back—it’s sometimes the boldest way forward. Whether she’s directing films, releasing music, or building new empires, she’s doing it all on her own terms—and that may be her greatest flex yet.
