Drake is showing love to one of his longtime collaborators after 2 Chainz recently reflected on the story behind their iconic “No Lie” collaboration.
During a recent episode of the Me & Halo podcast, 2 Chainz looked back on how the 2012 hit came together. The rapper recalled running into Drake at the NBA All-Star Game and telling him he had a song for him—even though, at the time, he was essentially bluffing.
2 Chainz explained that he returned to his tour bus, which had a studio setup, and quickly chose the first beat he came across. That beat eventually became “No Lie.” After recording his verse, he sent the track to Drake, who responded positively but kept him waiting for several weeks before sending his verse back.
When Drake finally returned the song, 2 Chainz said he only needed to hear it a couple of times before realizing they had something special. The track went on to become one of his early major successes and earned him one of his first plaques.
Drake clearly appreciated the story and responded with some major praise of his own. In an Instagram comment, the Toronto superstar referred to 2 Chainz as one of his idols and mentors, adding that he wouldn’t be the artist he is today without him.
The exchange highlights the longtime relationship between the two rappers, who have collaborated numerous times throughout their careers. Beyond “No Lie,” their joint work includes songs such as “Sacrifices,” “All Me,” “Big Amount,” and “Bigger Than You.”
They also appeared together on “F**kin’ Problems” alongside Kendrick Lamar and A$AP Rocky, a collaboration that has taken on additional significance given Drake’s later public conflicts with both artists.
Despite the many changes in hip-hop over the years, Drake and 2 Chainz have maintained a strong creative connection. Their latest exchange offers another reminder of the impact their collaborations have had on both artists’ careers—and how one spontaneous studio session ultimately helped create a memorable rap hit.
