Lord Ivan is a young music producer whose versatility in house music, hip-hop, and alternative styles have earned him instant recognition. In this interview, he tells us what influences him and his music.
Q. Can you tell us what got you into music?
Lord Ivan: I began producing music in high school, but my love for music has always been a part of my life. Whether I was studying or working, music has always created the space for me to express myself. As an avid traveler, I have had the fortune of listening to some of the grooviest music composed around the world. The house scene in Europe has particularly influenced me in my earlier years as I lived in Switzerland for many years. I started getting more into rap during college, and finally started to meet serious players when I moved to New York.
Q. When did you realize that you could pursue a career in music?
Lord Ivan: It was mainly in college when I realized I should dedicate more time to the craft, as I started gaining the respect of local artists. At this point I started to develop a major affinity towards hip-hop, where I ultimately made friends with some local rappers who wanted me to produce for them. Then without much planning, I found myself freestyling with rappers at parties and hangout sessions.
The rap scene vibed differently and appealed to me. I eventually started connecting with professional musicians and event promoters. After doing multiple small performances, I finally got to open a sold-out show for 3-time Grammy winner – Nelly. Since then, I have been approached by many platinum producers who like my style, and we are now collaborating on my future releases.
Q. How do you wish your music to be perceived?
Lord Ivan: I hope to create music that’s international – something you can relate to while craving its novelty. Like I said before, traveling has influenced my music deeply, and that’s something I wish to bring to the turntable, so to speak.
Dancing to his own tune, it’ll be interesting to see where Lord Ivan’s music takes him next.
