Lil Skies, once a rising star in the realm of melodic trap, seems to be taking a step back with his latest single “DEATH.” From his chart-topping hits like “Nowadays” and “Red Roses” featuring Landon Cube to his acclaimed 2017 project “Life of a Dark Rose,” Skies had cemented his presence in the rap scene with his infectious tunes centered around love and relationships. However, the trajectory seems to have shifted since his 2019 release “Shelby,” leaving fans wondering where he’s headed next.
With the impending release of his fourth album, “Out Your Body Music,” anticipation was high, but unfortunately, “DEATH” doesn’t quite hit the mark. The buzz around town suggests that the album is slated to drop before the end of March, but if this single is any indication, it might not live up to expectations.
In “DEATH,” Lil Skies experiments with a new sound and cadence, deviating from his signature style. While innovation is commendable, the execution falls short. The track’s chorus feels clunky, and the beat, reminiscent of a video game soundtrack, quickly grows tiresome. It’s a departure from the polished production and catchy hooks that fans have come to expect from Skies.
This isn’t the first time Skies has ventured into unfamiliar territory. His previous track, “THOUSANDS,” also showcased heavy use of reverb and auto-tune, but in a way that complemented his style rather than overshadowed it. Unfortunately, “DEATH” doesn’t strike the same balance, leaving listeners craving the infectious melodies of his earlier work.
As much as it pains us to admit, “DEATH” doesn’t quite hit the mark. But with Lil Skies’ track record of delivering memorable hits, there’s still hope that “Out Your Body Music” will showcase his true potential. Until then, fans will have to wait and see if Skies can reclaim his throne in the world of melodic trap.
