Ogcrains started life out in Newport Beach, California. His childhood was idyllic, full of compassion, sports, dirt bikes, and everything that makes SoCal great. One of those things is the illegality that tempts many teenagers; that was there, too, especially after high school. What is the purpose of life if it doesn’t have at least a little bit of hardship?
After getting into trouble, he found his way back to live with his parents in North Carolina, right on the cusp of the Rocky Mountains. His interest in music, sparked by legends like Dr. Dre and J Dilla, only grew with time, serving as a respite from the darker times in his life. One also gets a sense of hearing his production with a glimmering sheen, much like Dr. Dre’s productions. However, for the sheer brevity, the economic impact of each verse, and every beat, well, that’s a massive part of J Dilla’s influence, of knowing what to include and exclude. The clarity of Ogcrains’ production is a testament to that.
He brings himself into the mix. He shares himself with the listener, and it adds to the authenticity of what he does. The way the verses reference both aspects of his past, his failures, and what he has to look forward to gives his music that thing that makes it sound – it gives it a soul.
