For Summer Walker and Yung Miami, co-parenting is a journey that requires patience, understanding, and a willingness to adapt. The two artists, both mothers navigating the complexities of blended families, opened up about their experiences during the latest episode of Over It Radio on Apple Music, which aired on Thursday (Dec. 19). Around the 26-minute mark, they responded to a voicemail from a listener seeking advice on becoming a good stepmother while managing a fiancé’s contentious relationship with the mother of his child.
Walker, a mother of three, including twins, was characteristically direct in her response. “I would say, don’t interact with the baby mamas,” the No Love singer advised. Reflecting on her own attempts, she explained that such interactions often went poorly, especially if the other party wasn’t open to collaboration. “If they’re ‘hood rat, hood rat, hoochie mamas,’ it’ll never be a true, genuine interaction,” she added, emphasizing that co-parents should focus on clear communication and avoid unnecessary involvement from others.
On the other hand, Yung Miami offered a more measured perspective, suggesting that relationships between new partners and co-parents should develop naturally. “The bond should come naturally. Nothing should be forced,” she shared. Miami, who co-parents her 11-year-old son, Jai, and five-year-old daughter, Summer, spoke about the importance of trust and open communication. “I’m not the baby mama that’s like, ‘Don’t take my child around that woman.’ You can take her, but I just need a conversation with her first. I want to know where my child is and what y’all are doing.”
Throughout the discussion, the two stars shared heartfelt memories and advice, offering a glimpse into the strength required to balance motherhood with their careers. However, Miami admitted she would prefer to avoid dating men with children in the future, describing it as “too much” and “baggage.”
Walker and Miami’s candid conversation underscored the challenges and rewards of co-parenting, showing that with honesty and mutual respect, it’s possible to navigate even the most complex family dynamics.
