In a candid conversation with Zane Lowe on Apple Music, SZA opened up about her unique perspective on success, asserting that she values respect for her intelligence and creative abilities over conventional accolades. With two albums under her belt, including the chart-topping “SOS,” and a staggering nine Grammy nominations for 2024, SZA finds herself at the zenith of her career.
The interview delved into SZA’s mindset, revealing her current state of creative freedom. She shared, “I’m in a space now where [I’m like] f**k it with everything on the creative side. The business side is scary, but on the creative side, it’s kinda just like, nah, I don’t have any more goals, so I might as well just try [new things] at this point.” This sense of liberation has propelled her to explore new musical territories beyond the constraints of expectations.
SZA’s journey has been marked by significant milestones, from platinum records to encounters with musical icons like Stevie Wonder and Beyoncé. Despite these achievements, she emphasized that her motivation was never to meet a predefined bar; instead, she sought respect for her intelligence and the ability to express herself creatively.
“I never did it for the bar; I did it for respect. Like the accolades are cool but I was really just doing it for respect to show that I’m smart… letting people know I’m an intelligent person… or that I can write my own lyrics, or that I can make a certain style of song because that’s the goal I wanted to achieve to show I can work my brain that way.” SZA’s success narrative transcends industry norms, with her defining success as garnering respect among her peers for her authentic self.
