The recent face-off between hip-hop titans Drake and Kendrick Lamar has left fans buzzing, but not everyone is on board with the excitement. Funkmaster Flex, the legendary New York DJ, is questioning the legitimacy of the feud. Is this truly a lyrical battle, or just a well-orchestrated career move?
On June 20, amidst the frenzy following Kendrick Lamar’s explosive “Pop Out” Concert—where he dropped tracks like “Euphoria” and “Not Like Us”—Flex took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his doubts. “I HAVE DRAKE / KENDRICK QUESTION?,” he posted. “WAS IT A LYRICAL COMPETITION? OR A MARKETING / CAREER RELAUNCH? I NEED TO UNDERSTAND WHAT ARE THE RULES IN A LYRICAL BATTLE?”
Flex’s skepticism might be controversial, but he’s not alone in weighing in on the clash. LL COOL J, a seasoned veteran in the rap game, recently voiced his thoughts on The Bootleg Kev Podcast. According to him, the Drake vs. Kendrick feud is beneficial for hip-hop. “I thought it was great for Hip Hop,” LL stated. “They both did well and held their own. I thought Kendrick won, but Drake definitely didn’t disgrace himself.”
LL COOL J highlighted the importance of these lyrical duels in maintaining the vibrancy of the hip-hop scene. “The key to that stuff is as long as it doesn’t distract you from your ultimate goal, it’s a wonderful thing to participate in. I love it,” he added.
Adding another layer to the conversation, Ice Cube chimed in on The Big Podcast with Shaquille O’Neal. The N.W.A icon reminisced about classic rap battles while commenting on the current Drake vs. Kendrick saga. “I always approve of rap battles. That’s the essence of the game. It goes back to Busy Bee and Kool Moe Dee and even further than that,” Cube remarked. He emphasized the importance of keeping it non-physical, stressing that the battle should remain purely lyrical.
Ice Cube also believes Kendrick has the upper hand for now but warned that Drake could still make a comeback. “I think Kendrick is up, he’s landed the more hard and effective punches, but that doesn’t mean Drake can’t get off the canvas. If I was Kendrick, I’d stay locked and loaded just to be ready for whatever,” Cube advised.
As fans dissect each line and bar from these heavyweights, the real question remains: is this battle about lyrical supremacy, or just a savvy play for the spotlight? Only time will tell if this feud will go down in history as a classic or a clever marketing move.
