AZ Chike is setting the record straight about Kendrick Lamar and the rumors surrounding his latest album, No Rest For The Wicked.
Speculation began after Chike posted photos with Kendrick, leading fans to believe the two Los Angeles artists might have been preparing another collaboration. Given their previous connection on “peekaboo,” the possibility of a new Kendrick appearance immediately generated plenty of attention.
As the rollout continued, however, rumors started circulating that Kendrick had recorded a verse for Chike’s project before ultimately pulling it from the album. Chike has now made it clear that wasn’t what happened.
During a recent concert, Chike addressed the speculation directly, explaining that Kendrick never submitted a verse for the project in the first place. He also acknowledged that he was careful about how he presented their interactions because he knew fans and media outlets could easily interpret the photos as evidence of an upcoming collaboration.
While Kendrick does not appear as a featured artist on No Rest For The Wicked, his involvement with the project reportedly went beyond simply offering encouragement.
Chike previously explained that he sent the album to Kendrick for feedback. One of the songs that caught Kendrick’s attention was “God’s Favorite,” which originally appeared later in the tracklist.
According to Chike, Kendrick felt the song needed to be moved much earlier because listeners would likely gravitate toward it. The track was ultimately pushed up to the third position, giving it a more prominent spot on the album.
Kendrick also offered Chike advice during the album’s creation. Rather than overthinking the process, the Compton rapper encouraged him to keep building, keep creating and enjoy the journey.
That makes Kendrick’s influence on No Rest For The Wicked an interesting one. Although fans didn’t get the highly anticipated verse, Chike still appears to have valued Kendrick’s creative input.
The situation also puts to rest speculation that Kendrick removed a verse from the album because of potential rap-beef implications. Chike’s clarification suggests there was never a Kendrick verse to remove, despite the assumptions that followed their social media appearance.
For now, another collaboration between the two West Coast artists remains uncertain. But considering Kendrick’s apparent involvement in the album’s sequencing and his support for Chike’s creative direction, the door could still be open for them to work together again in the future.
