Denzel Washington Shows Love to A$AP Rocky: “I Get It, Rihanna”

When Denzel Washington speaks, people listen. And recently, the legendary actor had nothing but praise for Harlem’s own A$AP Rocky—so much so that he said he completely understands why Rihanna fell for him.

Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Denzel described Rocky as more than just a stylish rapper. “You know what, I get it, Rihanna,” Washington said. “He’s intelligent, he’s nice, he’s handsome, he’s a good guy. He’s smart—a very bright man.”

That’s some high-level respect coming from an Academy Award winner.

Mutual Respect Between Rocky & Denzel

The admiration goes both ways. A$AP Rocky has shared in interviews that Denzel gave him life-changing advice years ago—way before they became co-stars in Spike Lee’s upcoming film Highest 2 Lowest.

Rocky told GQ that he once spent Christmas with the Washington family thanks to John David Washington (Denzel’s son). During that visit, Denzel pulled him aside and dropped some wisdom: “In a few years, you gotta get it together. It’s about family.” Rocky said he never forgot those words.

Spike Lee on Rocky’s Acting Skills

Spike Lee, who directed both Denzel and Rocky in Highest 2 Lowest, admitted he was impressed with how Rocky handled himself on set. “Don’t sleep on A$AP,” Lee told Jimmy Fallon. “He went toe-to-toe with Denzel. A lot of actors get swallowed up by Denzel’s presence, but Rocky wasn’t having that.”

Lee even joked about the resemblance between the two, saying Rocky could pass as Denzel’s son, which adds another layer to their on-screen chemistry.
