Collaborating with artists like 1takejay, Rucci, Priceless Da Roc, and Dmb Gotti, DŸLN shows promise to be a Los Angeles fan favorite with his debut album BoomTown.
Everyone has a goal they want to achieve in life. It could be to move to their dream country or to pursue their dream job. But achieving these objectives calls for effort. To fulfill a lifelong goal, one needs to commit their undivided attention. That is what Paul Dylan Mendoza, aka DŸLN, did to launch his career as a music producer. The east LA native has come up with his first album, BoomTown, just a few years after releasing his viral mixtape “Flavours” and two tours around the country.
A Musical Journey: From Netflix to TikTok
Brought up in East LA, DŸLN developed a love of dance and music as a child. Mixed in with a rough crowd he found his artistic footing and got himself out of trouble when he joined a dance group called “The Lab” at 14 years old. This allowed him to develop into a skilled choreographer over the years as he was asked to choreograph for “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” on Netflix – when he was just 18 years old. Although enjoying his dance career, music became his greatest passion while attending the University of California, Riverside. He was asked to tour China as a backup dancer in 2016 but opted to stay behind in his dorm and pursue a career in music instead.
On Soundcloud, DŸLN released his first mixtape, Flavours, which went viral and became a regular feature for parties and events across the country. This launched him as an artist, allowing him to begin touring. DŸLN headlined two tours in the US, performed for Insomniac’s Electric Daisy Carnival, and his annual shows titled “Flavours Fest” in California and Texas.
Another milestone in DŸLN’s career occurred when TikTok posted his song “Yike Or Die Mix” on their official account, resulting in 600,000 users sharing their own videos featuring the track. The song was so popular that some of the platform’s most popular accounts, including Charli D’amelio and Addison Rae, posted dance renditions of it.
A Melodious Tribute
On his first album, BoomTown, DŸLN has collaborated with artists like 1takejay, Rucci, Dmb Gotti, and Bay Area icon Priceless Da Roc. The album takes the listeners through various experiences in his hometown. It unfolds the tale of DŸLN’s career growth, ups & downs, and overall emergence as an artist and individual. The album depicts a memoir with heavyweights from the Bay Area and Los Angeles.
BoomTown, written over three years, highlights DŸLN’s potential to become a major player in Los Angeles. By recounting his traumatic experience of losing a friend to gun violence on one of the tracks, DŸLN conveys a powerful message of loyalty. The track’s guest performers, Rucci and Dmb Gotti, also talk about the challenges that come with growing up in the inner-city. Track 2: “PROUD” is a smooth RnB record topped off with braggadocious rhymes from 1TakeJay. However tracks 6 and 7 showcase a different style from what Los Angeles hip-hop fans are accustomed to, being eclectic house tracks with rap features from the likes of Famous Uno.
DŸLN aspires to grow his label, Flavours World Music. He wants to empower local artists and give a platform for them to access new opportunities. Finally, DŸLN says, “I just want to give people a platform.. to showcase their sound and put on for their community.”
