Some people are born for things. For a lot of those people, it’s just one thing. In the case of Ghana-born, Amsterdam-raised Alexandria Yaa, she seems to have been put on Earth to explore not just one, but a rich tapestry of creative pursuits. Multilingual & well traveled, Alex has already seen a lot of the world – but she feels like she’s only just beginning her personal journey.
When asked where her passions lie, it’s clear that Alex has a deeply creative spirit that manifests itself in multiple ways. “I really do love fashion,” she tells us. “Even when I was younger, I loved fashion… and painting! Fashion, it’s like turning something monotonous into a living piece of art.”
But she’s not always pouring her soul into her works. In her downtime, Yaa likes to ride her motorcycle, hit the gym, and tend to her houseplants. “Art gives us something to live for.” Alex smiles. “The moment when someone takes something you’ve seen a thousand times and makes it new, or better… I love that it can make me feel happy, or sad. Art and fashion never tell us how to feel. I feel like it just makes whoever we are, and whatever we’re feeling at that moment, safe to bring to the surface.”
Yaa is eloquent & reflective, her education apparent as she tells us: “I feel like I’m infinite and loved when I’m creating. Whatever I’m doing, whether it’s dressing up nice or painting… it feels like I’m in the company of someone who truly loves me.” She pauses, and tilts her head. “In a really comforting way, you don’t realize that the person loving you, is you. It feels like it’s the universe loving you.”
