L100T’s “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” Reaches No. 9 on the Canadian iTunes Hip-Hop/Rap Chart

L100T has reached a new milestone with “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” as the deeply personal record climbed to No. 9 on the Canadian iTunes Hip-Hop/Rap chart.

Behind the chart position is a song rooted in a much more personal chapter of the artist’s life.

“Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” was inspired by L100T’s recent mental-health journey and the process of understanding symptoms that were eventually connected to PTSD. He initially received diagnoses of adjustment disorder, anxiety and depression, but felt those labels did not fully explain what he was experiencing. Eventually, his symptoms were connected to PTSD, giving him a clearer understanding of what had been happening internally.

That experience became the foundation for the record.

Drawing inspiration from the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, L100T uses the two characters as a metaphor for the emotional contrast he experienced between feeling grounded in everyday life and entering a heightened state when confronted by certain triggers.

The concept is not intended to suggest that PTSD creates a split personality. Instead, the two sides of the song represent how quickly someone’s emotional state can change when past experiences are brought back to the surface.

For L100T, one side represents the person who feels calm, present and like himself. The other captures moments of hypervigilance, anxiety and the darker state of mind that can emerge when the brain enters survival mode.

That contrast became an important part of both the writing and sound of the record.

Music also gave L100T a way to communicate experiences that were difficult to explain through ordinary conversation.

Growing up with influences including Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G., and later developing an appreciation for Eminem, L100T saw how artists could use different perspectives and characters to express complicated emotions.

Eminem’s use of Slim Shady particularly influenced his understanding of the creative possibilities behind an alter ego. Rather than recreating that approach, L100T used the idea as inspiration to find his own way of bringing a side of himself listeners may not normally hear into his music.

“Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” became that outlet.

Instead of hiding the difficult emotions surrounding his experiences, L100T used the record to confront them, turning internal conflict into a story listeners could hear unfold through the music.

The song was created alongside Sam at Hybrid Lab, who helped bring the emotional contrast behind the concept to life.

Now, reaching No. 9 on the Canadian iTunes Hip-Hop/Rap chart gives the song another milestone. A record created during a period of trying to understand his own experiences is now finding an audience beyond the circumstances that inspired it.

It is also only one part of a larger story.

“Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” connects to a narrative L100T plans to continue through his upcoming project, using music to explore different parts of his journey and the emotions surrounding it.

At its core, the record is less about having two identities and more about trying to understand the different emotional states that can exist within the same person.

For L100T, turning those experiences into music became a way to process something painful and transform it into something honest.
