- What’s your name?
My name is Ryan known as RyanThaOldMan
- Where are you from?
I was born and raised in the Bay Area of California, Martinez, CA but I have been in Salt Lake City since 2002
- How old are you?
I’m 44 years young with a birthday in November
4 .When did you start making music
Ever since I can remember, I was making up my own words to songs like I’m Bad by LL or anything from Ice-T. I actually still have a black and red BASF cassette tape with me rapping on it at 8 years old.
- How serious are you about your career?
I am very serious about my career. At this point in life what do I have to be scared of? Ever since I was a kid I’ve always wanted to perform and make people happy. Plus I’ve been watching Merkules and C-Lance do a 2 year go around and do songs with their childhood rap legends, ya know? I thought I want to do that so bad….Short get at me!
- Have you ever thought about quitting music?
All the time I was told I couldn’t do it, or I shouldn’t do it. I’m just one kid with a ridiculous dream that everybody wants. I would always…well, not everybody can do it, but I always knew I had a special something. And truth be told when I moved to Utah, I settled down, and was basically married for like 10 years. So there was a 15 year period where I made like 3 songs and a handful of beats. The desire would get to be too much tho…and now I can’t stop…won’t stop.
- Who inspires you the most?
Inspiration comes in so many ways in such different times. Honestly, I don’t have any one person anymore that I draw that from. I mean I’ve lived awhile so I can draw Inspiration from just having a great day when the chips were against me. But I will say, and I don’t really like to, but Covid for me was a blessing in disguise. No disrespect to the many who lost loved ones…I did do. But, it woke me up and I was a gig worker before that, dealing bar poker, basically any side job I could get. So just being at home on lockdown you can only watch so many movies. So I dusted off the equipment and started working on some music and stuff that I had built up inside for a long time. Haven’t stopped really since.
8.What got you into making music?
I wish I had this cool story of motivation and I got to meet a hero of mine…but no. I always dabbled in music somehow someway. But about 1995 I was working with my 2 good friends Don and Joe. And we would just hang out and smoke and freestyle over the radio. I had a couple of songs I had wrote by then and only a handful of people ever heard them, so I brought that up. Don said he had a friend he had grew up with that rapped and made beats and I was like mindblown that we knew somebody, possibly, who made beats. Mick is his name and to this day he is my favorite rapper of all-time, then Too Short. Anyways at the time the radio was saturated with No Limit Records this and Master P that…dont get me wrong, I liked it…but 2 or 3 albums every week was a bit much. So I said one day, man screw them…we xan do that as well…and did. Mick and I had lightning in a bottle I believe. There was a musical connection from the jump and we taught eachother so much and always fed off eachother and tried to out do eachother, which made us work hard and we made some classics in the late 90s in Martinez and Concord CA. And ever since I got that taste of really making songs…its been that.
9.Who is your favorite producer?
Easy Peasy! Ant Banks ALL DAY! He just had it and was making music I had never heard at the time…it was rough and street but funky and pimpish and I fell in love with how he did things, how he made rappers better just by letting them float around in some Oakland Funk. Ant Banks by far and it ain’t close.
- What is one of your best songs/beats?
Favorite song I’ve ever been a part of is a song called F.T.W. from our group back then, which was 7 of us and we went by BuckitBong…I absolutely love that song. For me personally, Sack 2 Burn I have a lot of fun with and it’s well liked. But I just released a song called WeThaPeople, it’s available everywhere music is listened to now. But it’s the first time I really spoke my mind on some issues…and the finished product which I did everything myself with that song…everything. It was well received and I had never gotten a feeling like that from a song I’ve done…it’s called “WeThaPeople” and is available now.
- Are you signed to a record or label?
I have a year plan with Distrokid. I like them, I can upload when I want and everything is in order. Ive always been an indie kind of guy tho growing up watching The Dangerous Crew do their thing and of course Master P with No Limit…that’s exactly what I wanted…also independent music was very big when and where I grew up.
- Have you ever performed?
Yes. All the time at parties and get togethers but on a stage for a crowd as a planned event…only twice…and they weren’t that big.
Question
- Who would you most likely collaborate with?
Again, easy peasy! My favorite of all time, Too Short…and if Banks did the beat…I could die right there. As far as the newer generations of music. I would love to do a collab with Shea Michael, SchoolBoy Q, Dax and then Cal Scruby…I think Cal is so slept on…and he’s not really…I think he’s that good.
- If you could open for any artist who would it be?
It would have to be Redman and Method Man because I truly believe we have the same sense of humor, and the reason we do music and I think it would just be so damn fun. But damn, I would love to open for Eminem…just to learn from him and watch his work ethic.
- What’s next for you?
Lunch, I’m starving! But seriously, I have some projects around the corner that are being taken care of quicker than I thought…it’s been the best of years for me music wise but the years for me in what seems like every other aspect of life going on….but it has brought some real pain and joy to the surface for me and I just finished my new EP called Outta Nowhere. It literally came out of nowhere. It’s basically a 5 song set that I’m ready to showoff on stage and it has so much energy. Stay tuned in, we’ll all see together. It’s No excuses anymore just go do it.
