Sexyy Red and GloRilla are challenging the outdated narrative that female rappers are “too sexual or over the top.” In a recent interview with XXL published on Tuesday (Dec. 17), the two artists discussed the double standards women in Hip Hop often face, pointing out that while their lyrics and videos draw criticism, male rappers are frequently given a pass.
“I think y’all [are] just some haters. Y’all don’t want your woman to shine because y’all insecure,” Sexyy Red expressed. She went on to call out the hypocrisy of male rappers being able to show off their chests or sag their pants without judgment, asking, “It’s not a problem when y’all do it, but y’all stealing our style. Why is it wrong when we do it?”
GloRilla chimed in, quoting Finesse2tymes’ “Back End” with the line, “It’s cool when they do it,” to which Sexyy Red quickly added, “It’s a problem when I do. F**k ‘em.” The two rappers made it clear that they’re not backing down from the criticism and are confidently embracing their individuality in the face of industry double standards.
