Jay-Z sparked a storm of reactions after delivering a headline-grabbing freestyle during his appearance with The Roots at the Roots Picnic. The performance quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the weekend, largely due to bars that listeners interpreted as shots aimed at several high-profile figures, including Drake, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Dame Dash, and Tory Lanez.
Among the first people to react was DJ Akademiks, who immediately took to social media with a series of posts criticizing the Roc Nation founder.
Akademiks described Jay-Z as “unhinged” and mocked the rapper’s decision to use the freestyle as a platform for addressing multiple rivals. He also suggested that Jay-Z may have been responding to perceived comments connected to Drake’s recent ICEMAN rollout, although there is no confirmed evidence linking the freestyle directly to Drake’s album.
The media personality continued escalating his criticism throughout the night, joking that Jay-Z appeared overly concerned about Drake’s success and claiming that the Brooklyn legend was reacting emotionally to recent developments in hip-hop.
Akademiks also questioned some of Jay-Z’s reported references toward Nicki Minaj and defended Drake throughout his commentary. In addition, he brought up Tory Lanez, claiming he had already informed the incarcerated rapper about the alleged lyrical shots directed his way.
The online rant didn’t stop there. Akademiks also criticized DJ Hed for praising Jay-Z’s performance and even took a swipe at LeBron James after the NBA superstar showed support for the freestyle on social media.
Despite the controversy, Jay-Z’s appearance at Roots Picnic was widely praised by many fans for its energy, lyricism, and surprise factor. Whether the bars were intended as direct disses or simply provocative commentary remains a topic of debate.
As clips from the performance continue circulating online, attention is now turning toward whether any of the artists mentioned will respond publicly. If they do, DJ Akademiks has already made it clear where he stands in the conversation.
