Clipping’s on J-Kwon’s “Tipsy”

In a surprising turn of events, experimental rap trio Clipping has brought new life to J-Kwon’s early 2000s hit “Tipsy.” Known for their avant-garde approach to rap, Clipping’s cover of this party-rap classic is making waves once again as it becomes available for individual streaming.

The original track, released by J-Kwon in 2004, climbed to number two on the Hot 100 charts. While Clipping is often associated with a darker and noisier side of rap, their eclectic taste has led them to revisit more mainstream classics. The lead single from their latest album, “Say The Name,” even incorporates an interpolation of the Geto Boys’ “My Mind Is Playing Tricks On Me.”

In 2020, amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Clipping joined forces with other artists for the “Save Stereogum” compilation. This initiative aimed to support the struggling publication by having artists cover songs from the 2000s. Clipping’s choice to cover “Tipsy” was a surprising yet bold move, showcasing their versatility within the rap genre.

Now, for the first time, fans can stream Clipping’s unique rendition of “Tipsy” independently from the compilation.
