DJ Akademiks is sounding the alarm on Young Thug and Lil Baby, using Pooh Shiesty’s shocking federal arrest as a cautionary tale about “playing gangster.”
The commentator launched into a pointed rant during a recent livestream, captured by his DJ Akademiks TV affiliate on Twitter. Though he didn’t explicitly name Shiesty’s legal predicament, the context was unmistakable.
“This is their future if they don’t cut it out,” Akademiks warned. “I’ma tell you that right now. Lil Baby and Young Thug, they’re running around playing gangster. This will be their future one day—we don’t know when—if they don’t cut out this gangster-ism behavior.”
The commentary comes as Pooh Shiesty faces federal charges for allegedly kidnapping Gucci Mane at gunpoint and forcing him to void their recording contract. The January 10 incident at a Dallas studio involved nine total suspects, including fellow Memphis rapper Big30 and Shiesty’s own father. Eight have reportedly been arrested.
Akademiks’ criticism follows his recent concerns about Young Thug’s alleged threats toward Charleston White, which surfaced last week. He characterized Thugger and his associates as moving recklessly and courting criminal behavior—claims neither artist has addressed publicly.
The speculation around Gucci Mane’s role in the investigation adds another volatile layer. Reports suggest the 1017 Global founder identified his attackers to authorities, including allegedly recognizing Shiesty through Instagram handles. That cooperation has sparked debate about snitching within hip-hop circles, though standard victim identification differs from active informant work.
Neither Young Thug nor Lil Baby currently face legal pursuit related to these specific allegations. Yet Akademiks’ broader point about street posturing catching up with artists resonates given hip-hop’s recent history of high-profile RICO cases and federal prosecutions.
The scrutiny surrounding rappers’ off-record activities shows no sign of slowing. As investigations into Shiesty’s case continue and Charleston White’s allegations against Thugger remain unresolved, expect more voices to weigh in on the intersection of street credibility and legal consequences.
