Tank is once again stepping up in defense of Chris Brown amid the ongoing backlash surrounding Brown’s latest album, BROWN.
Since its release, the 27-track project has generated intense debate online. Critics have revisited Chris Brown’s controversial history while questioning the quality and direction of the album itself. Meanwhile, many of Brown’s supporters — including several artists within the R&B community — have pushed back strongly against what they view as overly harsh criticism.
Tank has been one of Brown’s most vocal defenders throughout the controversy. Last week, the R&B veteran took to social media to criticize people he believes hide negativity behind the label of “opinion.”
“The problem is most of you offer destructive criticism,” Tank wrote online. “You disguise hate for ‘opinion’… You expect us, human beings, to just accept that and keep it moving!”
Tank continued by defending Brown’s response to the backlash and argued that artists deserve a basic level of respect regardless of whether listeners enjoy the music or not. He emphasized that criticism should not cross into personal attacks or outright disrespect.
His comments resurfaced again after Pitchfork published an extremely negative review of BROWN. Written by critic Alphonse Pierre, the review awarded the album a 1.3 out of 10 — reportedly one of the lowest scores the outlet has given in recent years.
The review described the project as “soulless” and heavily criticized its hit-focused approach, sparking another wave of online arguments between Chris Brown supporters and detractors.
Despite the criticism, Brown continues to maintain a dedicated fanbase and strong commercial presence. His tours regularly sell out arenas, and conversations surrounding his music continue to dominate social media whenever he releases a project.
The situation once again highlights how polarizing Chris Brown remains within the music industry and among listeners. While some critics believe his controversies overshadow the music entirely, others continue to defend both his talent and his influence on modern R&B.
As debates around BROWN continue, artists like Tank are making it clear they feel some of the criticism directed at Chris Brown goes beyond music and into personal hostility.
